Follow the guidelines below when you are preparing your manuscript to be submitted to TCQ. When you are ready to submit the manuscript, you will use our online system, Manuscript Central.

General Guidelines

  1. Format all parts of the manuscript (including abstract, block quotes, notes, references, etc.) to be double-spaced, with margins of one inch on all sides. Tables may be double or single spaced (p. 141).
  2. Center title on the first line of the first page of text. Next, insert one extra carriage return and then provide an informative abstract of 75 words or fewer. After the abstract, insert one additional carriage return, and insert "Key words:"  followed by five lowercase key words, separated by commas (no "and"), from your manuscript.  After key words, add one additional carriage return, then begin the main text of the manuscript.
  3. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper.
  4. Do not include acknowledgements in the file that you submit for peer review. If you include them, they will be deleted before the manuscript is sent to reviewers. If you want to add acknowledgements later, after the manuscript is accepted, you can place them at the end of the document, starting on a separate page, with "Acknowledgements" centered at the top of the page.
  5. Please note that APA style dictates two spaces after end-of sentence punctuation; however, TCQ uses only one space after each period, comma, colon, and semi-colon regardless of the punctuation's placement. The only exception is punctuation within abbreviations, such as "a.m." or "e.g." (p. 88).
  6. References should begin on a new page immediately after the main text of the manuscript ends. Insert the word "References," centered on the first line of the page. Entire reference page(s) should be double spaced. Each entry should be left aligned with a .5 inch hanging indent.  (Note: Consult the APA Manual for detailed information on how to format references. Also, take a look at our own References page in the style guide for TCQ specifics). 

Tables and Figures

  1. Each table or figure should be in a separate file, clearly labeled. Indicate "Insert Table _ here" or "Insert Figure _ here" at appropriate places in manuscript file.
  2. Table and figure captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a page that is completely separate. APA style says that captions should be descriptive and informative. Thus, authors should write captions that are complete sentences, and they should avoid captions that simply provide obvious information (such as repeating text that is already present in a screen shot or something similar). Include the purpose/rationale for the table or figure in the caption, and provide enough information that readers can interpret the visual independently from the text. (See example below under Item 4 in this list).
  3. When referring to tables and figures in the text, do so as follows: (See Figure 1). Place tables and figures in the most logical and easily accessible location in the manuscript. (See Manuscript Submission guidelines for more information.)
  4. For tables and figures reprinted or adapted from another source, include citation information for that source at the end of the caption, formatted as indicated below. If the source material is copyrighted, it is the author's responsibility to find out whether permission is necessary to reprint the table or figure. If permission has been obtained, that should be indicated at the end of the reference information as in the example below. (See Taylor & Francis for more information on seeking permission to reprint or adapt copyrighted materials).

Headings and Other Elements

  1. Indicate a first-level heading by all bold uppercase, centered text. Indicate a second-level heading by boldface and initial capital letters of all words except articles and prepositions (flush left). Indicate a third-level heading by indented, bolded letters with an initial capital letter for the first word, and end the title with a period. Make title heading flush left. (NOTE: This is one area where TCQ style differs from the APA Manual).
  2. Do not use endnotes unless they are absolutely necessary. Please make every effort to incorporate endnote material into the main body of the text. If you do have notes, please do not use the automatic feature of your word-processing software. Indicate each note with a superscript Arabic numeral in the main text (1, 2, 3, etc.). Place the notes on a separate page after the references. Follow APA guidelines for formatting the notes.
  3. APA style dictates that quotations longer than 40 words should be indented as block quotes. Every block quote should be left-aligned, indented .5 inch from the left margin, and double spaced. An extra carriage return should be inserted before and after each block quote.
