When your manuscript is ready to submit, you will need to log in to Manuscript Central. (If it is your first time to use the online submission and peer review system, you will have to click on "Register here" to create a new account).

After you have successfully logged in, you will see an "Author Center" icon. Clicking on this icon will start the submission process. As a first step, you will be prompted to enter a title, running head, 75-word abstract, keywords, author information, and cover letter. The cover letter should include the following:

  • a statement indicating which category the manuscript falls into (Original Research Article, Methodologies and Approaches, or Perspectives)
  • a statement that the manuscript has not been published and is not currently under consideration elsewhere. If the data have been published in some form elsewhere, the authors should indicate how the content of the submitted manuscript provides new information that is not available in previously published articles written by the authors
  • a 35-word biographic sketch of the author
  • the title of the manuscript; the names of the authors; the authors' affiliations; and the complete address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the author who will receive all correspondence.

Uploading the manuscript file

Next, you will upload the manuscript file. The manuscript file should contain the entire text of your article, including title, abstract, all text, references, and notes, but it should not include tables and figures (see below). Indicate where each table or figure should appear by placing the words “Insert Table _  about here” at the appropriate place in your manuscript file. Preferred file types for the manuscript are Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), Rich Text Format (.rtf), or Post Script (.ps). (Please consult Manuscript Central's documentation for more information on the types of files that can be uploaded.)

Because an anonymous review system is employed, authors' names and affiliations should not appear on the title page or elsewhere in the manuscript file (they will be keyed into the system and placed on a separate page in the cover letter file). If authors’ names or other identifying information is included in the manuscript, the editorial staff will either remove this information or ask the author to do so before sending the manuscript to reviewers.

Uploading tables, figures, and supplemental files

Next, you will upload tables, figures, and supplemental files. Each table or figure will be uploaded and designated as a separate file, as indicated in Manuscript Central. Appendixes should be uploaded and designated as supplemental files.

Illustrations (line drawings, halftones, photos, micrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files (EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only) are recommended for highest quality reproduction. They should be 300 dpi or higher and sized to fit on the journal page.

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text but should be uploaded as separate files when prompted in Manuscript Central. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction.
